Original characters must present a written, coherent background and description. If players wish to play first year students who have not yet been sorted, they must wait for the sorting ceremony to be held at the beginning of each school year; otherwise, they must choose their Houses themselves (and please note that +time is on a 1:1 ratio, so the Sorting will only occur once per RL year). Staff reserves the right to put a hold on a given year or House at any time desired to try to provide structure and balance.

News Other Cultures
If you're interested in playing a member of a culture which isn't, strictly speaking, British (by which, for purposes of discussion, we refer to Welsh, English, Irish, Scottish, Manx, and Cornish), all is not lost. Thanks to the British Empire's having spread so far before collapsing in on itself, there are a number of possibilities which are available to you. Keep the following things, however, in mind :

• Your PC must have been born in Britain, ideally second- or third-generation British;
• Your PC may not be from originally a country or culture which was not settled or ruled at some point by Britain;
• Historical considerations must be kept in mind, and anything which deviates from real-world points about said culture must be cleared BEFORE you RP it, with staff.

Following is a partial list of nations and historical notes which do qualify and which may be drawn from for such PCs :
China, Hong Kong, Singapore (Boxer Rebellion, Referendum, etc); India (colonized at one point, ruled for longer); South Africa (the two Boer Wars, for example); Malaysia, Thailand (rubber plantations); various others.

Countries which will NOT be considered at this point :
America, Japan, South and Central America/Mexico, Monaco, Russia.
